Catherine Opie is a photographer that was featured on an Art21 episode named “Change.” According to PBS, Catherine was born in Sandusky, Ohio in 1961. Catherine received her Bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the San Francisco Art institute in (1985).  She thought at the university of California until 2001. Catherine Opie’s works was featured in many famous art museums such as the Guggenheim museum in New York and the Angeles County Museum of art. Some of Opie’s works include “Somewhere in the Middle,” and “In Protest to sec offenders.” Catherine Opie is a photographer that captures the moment in photograph that she takes, Just like in her photograph of “In Protest to sex offenders.”

Change being the name of the episode can really correlate to what this artist hopes for her viewers to feel, “Change.” Catherine Opie created apiece named “somewhere in the Middle” that featured a series of four photographs of Lake Erie at different parts of the day. I personally like this piece because of the peaceful setting it was captured in. When I look at her series of four photographs of lake Erie at different times of the day, it gives me the since of peacefulness. The piece currently featured at a hospital where she hopes that her viewers can get a since of peace. She quoted “The fact that it’s going to be in a hospital setting, it could be life changing to people, for either good news or bad news.”

The majority of Opie’s photographs featured a random person, which captures their individual identity. Some of her photographs include “Justin Bond,” (1993) “Ron Athey” (1994) and “Divinity Fudge” (1997). Each and everyone in these photographs have their own unique thing that makes them who they are. I believe Catherine Opie did a really great job capturing that in her photographs. The one thing that her photographs remind me of is an art gallery in Chelsea that I visited, which featured an artist named Richard Avedon. Richard Avedon gallery featured a number of portraits that had many different individual that really captured that one thing that makes them who they are.

In my opinion Catherine Opie is a great photographer. Each of her pieces really has a meaning to what she is trying to communicate. If I had to choses one favorite piece, it would be “some where in the Middle” just because of the nature of the photographs.
